Wood instead of plastic

Simple wooden boxes made from leftover boards and shelves

Simple nailed and glued wooden boxes made from old shelf boards.

Less plastic, more wood. This only works if we recycle more wood and put it to new uses and not if we always consume new wood.

A big problem of our time is, on the one hand, the fast-moving nature of products and the far too great variety of materials in the house and in the workshop. I would like to continually reduce this. In the past, I, probably like many others, relied a lot on plastic boxes, like those from Ikea or other suppliers. But little by little I am trying to banish plastic as a material.

What few people know is that just over 100 years ago, the number of materials in the house was much more limited; I once heard in a lecture that there were only just over 10.

When cleaning out the old workshop, there was quite a mountain of old Lundia shelf boards left over. I couldn't sell them, they were already too rotten for the flat.

So I planed all the boards to a thickness of 10 mm and quickly made these boxes out of them with just a little glue and in the classic way without any complicated wood joints. The handles are new and ordered from China (probably), because unfortunately they don't make them in Germany any more.

I don't know how heavy a Systainer is. But it is made from a vanishing raw material and is very difficult to recycle.

These boxes are not even painted and I could put them in the compost like this after removing the nails and fittings.
